I just finished working with Embracing Excellence, a company out of Alexandria, Minnesota that provides professional development for educators and others. Dr. Ed Porthan is the main presenter at Embracing Excellence; he provides motivational and instructional speeches.
The needed a new web site that would attract search engines and better represent their business. Like many small businesses they had bought into a content management system, which technically allowed them to update their site – but in practice did not provide them with any more time to update their site.

Excaliburprima does event planning and conference management in Dublin, Ireland. They had a site that they liked but it wasn’t doing well with the search engines. Once I dug into the site I realized that the web developers had built the site on their own server and only pointed (and masked) the domain name to a folder on their server.
So Google thought their web site was only one page long. A single-page web site will never do very well. So we recreated the existing site and posted it on its own server.

Last year I worked with Ferguson Financial Group on their web site. Specifically, I performed research on the best keywords for them to use on their web site. They used those keyword terms in their titles tags and in the content throughout their site.
They recently contacted me for a checkup. I was pleased to see how well they were doing for “certified financial planner Minneapolis” with the search engines – but their focus had changed a bit – and they added a great new financial articles/blog section to their site.
So I renewed the research related to financial terms and now they’re focusing on wealth management and made some changes to highlight the articles section.

I just finished a new look for Timber Bay Lodge & Houseboats. We created a bunch of new tours too – so you can get a look at the inside of the houseboats and cabins.
The goal of the redesign was twofold. First, we wanted an updated look. Second, and this is mostly me, the old site backend included a lot of files in folders, which I think can make pages more difficult for the search engines to find. So I flattened the infrastructure of the backend significantly.

Today we launched the new and improved Britz Store Equipment web site. Britz sells commercial equipment, such as work tables, sinks, and walk-in coolers to grocery stores, restaurants, delis, and shops like that. They have a good looking site. We didn’t make any significant changes to the site layout or look. Their trouble stemmed from the fact that the web site was created almost entirely from graphics – so the search engines didn’t have enough text to define the site. So their ranking wasn’t as high as it could be.
As I said, the new site launched today so we’ll keep an eye on how Google feels about their new use of text over imgages.

I just finished a fun web site for kids as part of the Eagle Nest Lodge web site. Eagle Nest Lodge is located near Grand Rapids (it’s really in Deer River) on Lake Winnie (aka Lake Winnibigoshish) and Lake Cutfoot Siouux.
It’s a fun resort – especially for families with kids. It’s open through the fall.

AARCEE Party & Tent Rental has supplies for parties, weddings, corporate events and more. I love visiting their shop because they have lots of beautiful tables with fun, festive and elegant settings.
Well we just did an intervention with a new web site . They have always had a nice catalog that folks have found easy to use. The catalog include hundreds if not a thousand items – so we didn’t want to change anything there. But there page was entirely in php – no html so no visible text for the search engines and therefore the search engines were not picking up the pages.
So we’re recreated the pages in html and created connections from the pages to the catalog. We’ve gone live today and I’ll be keep an eye on how long it takes for Google to find the new site. Some people say it’s not worth submitting a site to the search engines – but I disagree. In a case where there have been major changes that I want tracked quickly I submit (or re-submit) and generally I find it does help.

I want to welcome a new web site into the world – American Appliance & Mechanical, based out of Coon Rapids, Minnesota. I was very pleased to unveil the site last week and completely forgot to mention it in my blog.
One tip – American appliance offers coupons (online and off) twice a year, in the fall to clean the furnace and in the spring to look at central air conditioning units. So, next time you’re cleaning house you’ll have to remember them.
