Google Health

July 30, 2008 1 comment

OK I haven’t tried this one yet – and I’m not sure I’m going to but I found it very interesting. Google is now helping you organize your medical records online: https://www.google.com/health/html/tour/index.html

You sign up.
Track medical conditions – and learn more about them if you want.
Import medical records.
View medical history.
Learn about how medicines might interact – possibly order subscriptions online.
Find doctors and hospitals.
Have everything at your fingertips.

They say everything is private and safe. I suspect that your own computer is probably the weakest link as far as that goes. It might have been nice to have all of this last year in Dublin – though it didn’t really come up. I guess I would find this helpful to track kids, if I had a lot of medications or conditions, and/or if I traveled a lot.

Where I’ve Been

July 23, 2008 Leave a comment

Today’s Byte is just for fun. But first — a serious warning… I happened to check my debit card statement this month and found almost $700 in fraudulent charges. Someone had gone to town at gas stations in Georgia. Luckily half of the charges happened while we were flying home from Dublin so we should have no problem disputing them, but still a hassle.

Back to the fun… Where I’ve Been lets you track the places around the world where you’ve lived or visited and where you want to live. You can check it out here: http://w3.whereivebeen.com

Or see my finished map here:

GoToMyPC

Today’s Byte is courtesy of my Dad, who is a big GoToMyPC user. His computer at work uses a lot of monitoring software that he doesn’t have or want at home. Specifically he has cameras around work that feed into his desktop monitoring. To see what’s going on from home, he logs into his desktop at work using GoToMyPC (https://www.gotomypc.com/).

I know he’s been very happy with it and often uses it as a remote server for shared files. It’s $20 per month for each computer you want to see.

There are a couple of similar products that are out there for free (such as LogMeIn https://secure.logmein.com) but I don’t have any experience with them.

Predictive Texting

I got a new phone. (Yea!)
It has predictive texting. (Boo!)
I fixed it by holding down #. (Yea!)

There’s the text-friendly version of this week’s Byte. The longer story… I did get a new phone and mostly I like it. I’m not a big texter but I like to text occasionally. I tried to send a text with my new phone but it had predictive texting set up, which works like auto-fill. The phone tries to guess what word I’m typing as I type it. It wasn’t ever close – and I couldn’t get it to stop. So I looked it up online and the answer, if you have a Samsung phone, is to hold down the pound key before you try to start a text. It seems like I might need to do that each time I send a text. Maybe it learns my words as I type and will be useful in 6 months – but I was so happy to find a fix I had to share the info.

It seems as if this is a little bit of a standard – but AT&T has aggregated instructions for a few types of phone:

I hope this will save someone some sad texting.
