LibriVox

January 29, 2006

I ran across a super fun site today – LibriVox (http://www.librivox.org/) -their catch line is “acoustical liberation of books in the public domain.” They catalog and store audio recordings of books in the public domain.

Through LibriVox you can download an old favorite or read and upload arecording of an old favorite. I think the literary and library folks on theByte list will like the site – but also I think it’s a fun way to see how some of this audio over the Internet works.

LibriVox does a good job of explaining how to download the software you needto access their files and various steps to take to get everything working.

One word of warning: these files are large so it takes a while to downloadthem. We’re taking a family/work trip to Brainerd next week and I might tryto download some files to keep kids entertained in the back. LibriVox led me to kayray.org (http://kayray.org/audiobooks/), a site that seems to focus on kids’ books.

Internet Frog & 151 SEO Tools

January 16, 2006

Today’s Byte is a quick one and just includes two web sites:

First – The Internet Frog. http://www.internetfrog.com/

The Internet Frog is a site full of free tools including:

  • A speed test – click to see how fast your Internet connection is -uploading and downloading info
  • A free virus check – apparently provided by McAfee
  • Spyware removal tools – I must admit I didn’t test this one out

Second – 151 SEO Tools http://www.seocompany.ca/tool/seo-tools.html

OK I only perused the list of tools that will help you market your web siteto the search engines – but they listed a few of my favorites. On a day whenI have more time I am definitely going to check out the rest of the list.

Search Engine Ranking

January 11, 2006

Two quick items this week. One is related to what I actually do; the otherisn’t.

Search Engine Ranking Tool http://www.mikes-marketing-tools.com/ranking-reports/

If you have a web site – one of your goals is to make sure that customerscan find you easily with the search engines. This online tool will let youtype in your web site address and a couple of potential search terms andwill then tell you how you rank with seven of the top search engines, including Google, Yahoo and MSN. I use a tool like this (except my tool iskind of expensive) when I assess web sites.

Coleen Rowley gave a presentation to a group of librarians yesterday. Shespoke on balancing civil liberties and security and she was just great. Shehas a chapter on that topic online at:http://www.coleenrowley.com/documents/CivilLiberties.doc.  I won’t sayanything else – but I know lots of people on this list are interested in allaspects of information and I think her take on the freedom of information isfun to hear or read.

(I will admit that I’m member of the librarian groupand arranged the meeting for yesterday so I’m also thankful to Coleen fortaking the time to talk to us.)

New Years Resolutions

January 4, 2006

Did you make a New Years resolution? Have you kept it? Here are some of thetop resolutions and some online resources to help you keep resolute:

  1. Lose weight. I have known people who have had great success with E-Diets.
  2. Get fit. OK, to point you to a web site to keep fit would be silly but here is a fun (dated) article from CBS News on some exercise gadgets they reviews in 2003.
  3. Spend more time with family. I think the Internet can be a good place to find family activities. I’d start with your local paper (such as http://www.startribune.com/1376/), your local chamber of commerce (such as http://www.saintpaulchamber.com/visitor), or a family-focused site such as FamilyFun.com.
  4. Find a (better) job. It’s hard to beat Monster for job info and want ads; however LinkedIn can be a great place to search your network of friends and colleagues for contacts.
  5. Quit Smoking. The CDC has a good site, which I like because unlike many smoking cessation sites it is not sponsored by a tobacco company.
  6. Help Others. Volunteer Match hosts a great searchable database of volunteer opportunities.
  7. Get out of Debt. Market Watch has a nice site on personal finance. I like their getting started page – which isn’t so much about getting out of debt but building your finances.
